texting/cell phones in meetings

Texting or cell phone use in meetings is, in my opinion a display of a primary character defect of ALL addicts... Raging self-obsession. I hope to NEVER be so important that I can't survive 1 hour WITHOUT my cell phone and I doubt there are many members who ARE that important. The meeting is a place of recovery and when I observe someone (quite often) texting throughout a meeting I can't help but wonder why they are bothering to be IN the meeting..how much experience, strength and hope are they absorbing? It is rude, distracting and I feel sends a message of "less than important" to the purpose of the meeting. As far as the control part of requesting that this practice be stopped... ANY mass meeting has to have rules of order to maintain the proper atmosphere to the purpose of the meeting.NO group should be "afraid" to have such rules and enforce these rules. Everyone in that meeting, especially the newcomer are supposedly there for experience, strength and hope to enable them to get through TODAY w/o the use of drugs. It is the group's responsibility to foster an atmosphere that allows these purposes to flourish. Texting, side talking, wandering in and out to answer calls etc. are ALL extremely distracting to those that are there for the true purpose of the meeting....Recovery ! Lack of order is the first step to CHAOS and that is something that ALL addicts should have already had enough of in life !!! Peace ! RAbear51

Re: texting/cell phones in meetings
I know in my area a lot of people are texting all the time.I guess it is how much you want your recovery.I think it is very distracting number one ,not a good image for newcomers either.Although a lot of them are texting too.I have written an article in our regional newsletter. Some of the hospitals we meet at to have regional meetings have cellphone blockers. They are an idea.
